This kanji (Japanese/Chinese "character") is "Tao," roughly translated as "Way." It is superimposed on a monumental form called a "dolmen." These neolithic structures are largely an archeological mystery found in all parts of the world. There is no consensus about when, why, how or by whom the earliest of these (from around 7000 years ago) were made. They generally consist of a large horizontal stone slab or megalith resting on two or more upright slabs to form what some have described as a "gate" or "portal".
