You can listen to a painting. It isn't just about looking, it's about paying attention and to pay attention you need all your senses as well as your mind. So, "can you hear it?" In this painting what you're listening for or looking at or wondering about is one of the most familiar of Zen koans (A 'koan', in Japanese, is a "matter for public thought."). Here's the koan: "You know the sound of two hands clapping. What is the sound of one hand clapping?"
A Zen student working with his/her Zen teacher might be given this koan to study as an aid to reaching enlightenment. S/he might consider it for only a moment or study it for weeks or years to discover the answer. The answer cannot be told but it can be realized. There is an answer. The student need look no further than now/here.
